For Swedes Abroad

Sometimes you don’t miss Sweden. You miss one tiny thing from it.

What people miss is not always what they expected. Sometimes it’s the smell of cut grass, the crunch of snow under your shoes, the stillness of a lake, or those bright summer evenings that never really seem to get dark.

Sometimes it’s hearing Swedish around you. Someone getting the joke without an explanation. Picking blueberries near home. A quiet cup of coffee. A normal cheese sandwich. Kalles on crispbread. Lösgodis on a Saturday. Even something as ordinary as a dishcloth.

The strange thing is that home rarely lives in one big thing. It lives in small, ordinary moments you once took for granted.

That’s often what home really is.

What do Swedes actually miss?

We asked Swedes living abroad. These are some of the answers.

The smell of cut grass.

Bright summer nights.

Picking blueberries near home.

The crunch of snow under your shoes.

And sometimes, it isn´t something you can pack.

We asked Swedes living abroad what they miss. Some of the answers weren’t things at all.

“Someone who understands my Swedish references.”

“The silence. The forest. The language.”

“Allemansrätten.”

“Hearing Swedish around me.”

Sometimes home is just this.

Still water. A long summer evening. And the freedom to simply get in.

What do you miss?

One thing. Big or small. What’s the little piece of Sweden you find yourself missing?

And sometimes, you can.

For the things that do fit in a box, we’re here.
